IPL 2022 auction

A total of 1214 players have registered, with noteworthy absentees from the first longlist including Starc, Gayle, Archer, and Stokes.

David Warner, who was named Player of the Tournament at the recent T20 World Cup, and Mitchell Marsh, who was named Player of the Match in the final, are among 49 players who have set their base price for the 2022 super IPL auction at a maximum of INR 2 crore (about US$ 269,000). Mitchell Starc, Sam Curran, Ben Stokes, Chris Gayle, Jofra Archer, and Chris Woakes are among the prominent absentees from the original longlist,

R Ashwin, Shreyas Iyer, Shikhar Dhawan, Ishan Kishan, Suresh Raina, Pat Cummins, Adam Zampa, Steven Smith, Shakib Al Hasan, Mark Wood, Trent Boult, Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock, Kagiso Rabada, and Dwayne Bravo are among the big names on the list, which includes 17 Indians and 32 overseas players.

A total of 1214 cricketers have registered for the auction, including 270 capped players, 312 uncapped players, and 41 from Associate teams, and the list was sent to the ten franchises on Friday. Once the franchises have returned their wishlists, the IPL governing council will prepare a final, trimmed list closer to the two-day auction, which is scheduled for February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru.

The IPL will hold its first mega auction since 2018 when the tournament featured eight teams. There are two more teams in this auction after the IPL sold two new franchises - to be based in Lucknow and Ahmedabad - for record sums last October. The ten franchises have already spent nearly INR 338 crore (approximately US$ 45 million) on retaining and acquiring 33 players. The majority of franchises will enter the auction with significant funds to spend to assemble a new squad, but the Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals will have a large purse.

While experience is a valuable commodity in the IPL, franchises tend to invest in young players who can help build teams for the future during mega auctions. It's no surprise, then, that players like Devdutt Padikkal, Harshal Patel, and even emerging West Indies allrounder Odean Smith have set their reserve price in the highest bracket. Padikkal, who made his India debut in Sri Lanka last year, has excelled for Royal Challengers Bangalore, who signed him in 2020 for a base price of INR 20 lakh (approximately US$ 27,000). With his fluid technique, aggressive mindset, and long levers, he has an IPL century to his name.

Harshal, who was traded by the Delhi Capitals to the Royal Challengers ahead of the 2021 IPL, was the highest wicket-taker with 32 strikes last season. Harshal, on the other hand, chose to go to auction this time, confident in his ability to bowl both with the new ball and at the death, where he has made the most impact with his clever changes of pace.

Smith, on the other hand, is a complete unknown in the IPL. Those who have seen Smith, a 25-year-old Jamaican, play believe he has the potential to become the next Andre Russell. Smith can not only deliver a serious pace, but he has also shown in tournaments such as the T10 that he can make an impact with the bat.

Batter Shahrukh Khan, who is expected to receive a large bid and has even turned down an offer from his previous franchise Punjab Kings, has set his starting price at INR 20 lakh. Shahrukh, a tall and powerful power-hitter known for his lower-order finishing skills, was paid INR 5.25 crore (approximately US$ 700,000) in the 2021 auction by Punjab. Another uncapped Indian player who has listed himself at the lowest base price and is expected to attract significant offers is fast bowler Avesh Khan, who was bought by Delhi Capitals for INR 70 lakh (approximately US$ 94,000) a couple of years ago and was the second-highest wicket-taker behind Harshal in the 2021 IPL.
